| The state of Indiana has built a reputation in the world of sports, particularly in the areas of auto racing, basketball and football. It is the home of the nationally recognized NBA team Indianapolis Pacers and the NFL team Indianapolis Colts, which have won a number of championship games in honor of the Hoosiers. Aside from the sports teams, the state is also the host of the world's largest single-day motor sports race called the – Indianapolis 500 or Indy 500. This race is historically one of the oldest sporting events in the country, with the first race held in 1911 at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Up to this day, this sporting event is held annually over the Memorial Day weekend, and has become a very important tradition for the Hoosiers. It has also become one of the three most popular racing events in the world, attracting a follower of motor sport enthusiasts from around world, including Europe, Great Britain and Australia. |
